OTA strategies and over-the-air updates

Modern vehicles increasingly depend on software-driven functions that must remain up to date throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle. Over-the-air updates make it possible to deliver new software versions, function improvements, configuration changes, and corrective measures efficiently and securely without requiring every update to take place in a workshop environment.

We support our customers in developing OTA strategies that are technically robust, process-safe, and aligned with complex E/E architectures. Our work begins with the analysis of the existing system and software landscape. We examine control units, functions, dependencies, communication paths, software versions, configuration data, and update-relevant interfaces. Based on this, we identify which systems are suitable for OTA updates, which technical and process-related requirements must be fulfilled, and where potential risks exist within the overall architecture.

We support the definition of structured OTA concepts across development, validation, release, and operation. This includes update strategies, rollout logic, compatibility checks, version control, data consistency, and fallback considerations. The objective is to ensure that software and data updates are delivered in a controlled, traceable, and secure manner while maintaining system stability and vehicle functionality.

A key part of our expertise lies in connecting OTA processes with software and data management. Reliable over-the-air updates require clean versions, clear baselines, correct configuration data, and transparent documentation. We ensure that update packages, target data, release states, and vehicle-specific variants are aligned before software is transferred into the vehicle environment.

We also support the validation of OTA-related processes and system behavior. This includes software updates including configuration, test bench updates, vehicle commissioning, diagnostics, and verification of communication capability after the update. By analyzing system interactions and fault patterns, we help detect update-related issues early and reduce integration risks before deployment.

Our goal is to create OTA strategies that enable secure, transparent, and reliable software updates across the vehicle lifecycle. The result is a future-proof update ecosystem that supports continuous improvement, reduces integration risks, and strengthens the long-term stability of modern E/E systems.
